Day 4 Trinity Creek to Deer Creek

During the morning of our fourth day, we passed through some of the biggest water in the canyon. Granite, Hermit and Crystal Rapids followed in quick succession over a five mile stretch of river.

Around lunchtime we motored into one of the major tourist spots - Elves Chasm, which sports one of the best places for diving anywhere. A natural arch about 7 m high provides the launching platform. The blurry picture to the right captures one of our party (Elena) in mid-flight.

Another hike up Blacktail Canyon (Mile 120) followed in the afternoon. We finished the day at another famous place, Deer Falls, which empties directly into the Canyon. It seems that Deer Creek has recently lost its way and is not quite finished cutting through the canyon wall.

Before dinner, a few of us hiked to the top of the falls to inspect Deer Creek for ourselves. The old Indian path featured some spectacular views and some narrow ledges that had some of us quivering in fear. Our hike finished at another beautiful swimming hole framed by several large cottonwood trees.
